Drive longer but save money.

This is what Google Maps has been offering for several months in the United States, Canada and Germany.

The option is now deployed in around forty European countries including France, reports BFMTV.

The principle is simple, when you type your starting point and your destination, Maps offers the most fuel-efficient route between the place of departure and that of arrival.

Google's algorithm makes it possible to establish eco-responsible routes by minimizing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The mapping service is based on the topography by evaluating ascents and descents, authorized speeds and potential traffic jams.

The application will be able to display the time difference and the estimated fuel saving if the economical route is chosen.

The gain may be indicated in euros if the information on the vehicle has been provided previously.

Up to 30% fuel savings

Google Maps is likely to find you a route that saves up to 30% fuel, at the cost of more time spent driving the car.

For those who use their vehicle daily, the formula saves tens of euros each month.

Google specifies that the option is not activated for journeys of less than 5 km since the time-saving ratio would be invisible.

In the event that the fastest route is also the least energy-intensive, Maps does not offer an alternative.

In the three countries where the service has been tested, a "reduction of 500,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions has been recorded, the equivalent of 100,000 thermal cars withdrawn from circulation", indicates the American giant in a communicated.
