Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong took the first official steps after the lottery, starting with the semiconductor plants in Giheung and Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do.

It looks like Samsung Electronics' future food and development of next-generation semiconductors, which is the growth plate of the Korean economy, started the 'New Samsung' management in earnest and overcame the economic crisis.

Samsung Electronics announced that Vice Chairman Lee attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the next-generation semiconductor R&D (R&D) complex held at Samsung Electronics' Giheung Campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province on the 19th.

Under the groundbreaking slogan of 'Creating the future with technology that does not exist in the world', Samsung Electronics announced that it would make another big leap in the semiconductor business by leading innovation based on its technological leadership.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice Chairman Lee Byung-cheol recalled the words of former Chairman Lee Byung-cheol, who said that 'the semiconductor industry is a high-value-added industry that not only has great marketability but also has a ripple effect on other industries'. ' He asked to secure technical skills.

He said, "I am starting a new challenge at the Giheung plant, where the first shovel was set up to build a semiconductor factory 40 years ago," he said. , let's continue the tradition of upfront investment. Let's create the future with technology that is not in the world."

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by more than 100 executives and employees, including Vice Chairman Lee, DS Division Head Gye Kyung-hyun, DS Division CTO Jeong Eun-seung, Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology Jin Kyo-young, Memory Business Division Director Lee Jeong-bae, Foundry Division Director Choi Si-young, and System LSI Division Manager Park Yong-in.

Giheung Campus is where Samsung started its semiconductor business with the world's third 64K DRAM development in 1983.

It is also the place where the world's first 64M DRAM was developed in 1992, the first place in the DRAM market in 1992, and the first place in the memory semiconductor field in 1993, etc.

Samsung Electronics plans to invest about KRW 20 trillion in the development of a research complex by 2028, including a dedicated line for semiconductor R&D, which is scheduled to be operated in the middle of 2025.

The R&D complex is expected to serve as a core research base in semiconductor R&D fields such as memory, fabless system semiconductor, and foundry (semiconductor consignment production).

It is interpreted that Samsung Electronics invested tens of trillions of dollars to build a large-scale R&D complex because of Vice Chairman Lee's will and determination to 'find the answer to the crisis through technology'.

Vice Chairman Lee has repeatedly emphasized the importance of securing differentiated and competitive core technologies in order not to be shaken in the face of crisis.

Samsung Electronics has shown overwhelming technological competitiveness in the memory field for the past 30 years, but as semiconductor technology reaches its physical limit as its semiconductor technology becomes ultra-fine at the nano level, the pace of development is slowing down and it is being fiercely pursued by its competitors.

In order to solve the technical challenges of overcoming the limitations of ultra-fine processes, the role of laboratories that make experimental and challenging attempts has become very important.

A Samsung Electronics official said, "Once the R&D line equipped with state-of-the-art facilities is completed, various tests can be conducted more freely and actively, shortening the development period for next-generation new products and improving the quality of semiconductors."

There is also the view that Vice Chairman Lee found the semiconductor business after the lottery to meet the public's expectations that he will contribute to overcoming the Korean economic crisis through semiconductors while taking care of the future.

Vice Chairman Lee previously announced that after the lottery on the 12th, "I will work hard for the national economy."

After the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice Chairman Lee visited the Hwaseong Campus and held a meeting with semiconductor executives and staff.

It is the first time in two years since the meeting with the employees of 'Working Moms' at the Suwon plant in August 2020 that Vice Chairman Lee met and had a conversation with executives and employees in person.

Vice Chairman Lee promised to gradually increase opportunities for direct communication after listening to the suggestions of employees.

In addition, it is known that he ordered the employees to "try to have a flexible mind that can cope with any change."
