At the time of the Sewol ferry disaster, the Supreme Court ruled that former President Park Geun-hye was informed of the situation in real time, and that former Chief of Staff Kim Ki-chun was acquitted and remanded.

The Supreme Court overturned the lower court that sentenced former chief Kim to one year in prison and two years of probation, and returned the case to the Seoul High Court.

The Supreme Court ruled that the part that revealed the facts, such as the number and time of reports, in the written questionnaire sent to the National Assembly by Kim Ki-chun cannot be regarded as false.
