“If you have a good point of view and don’t give up until the end, you can become a lawyer who can be Woo Young-woo or more.

The popular Wednesday-Thursday drama 'Strange Lawyer Woo Young-woo' (hereafter 'Woo Young-woo') is a drama depicting the process of growing up as a lawyer, Woo Young-woo, who has an autism spectrum disorder, joins a large law firm.

Although the main character with a disability overcomes prejudice, it is centered on the growth period, but it is also evaluated as excellent as a legal drama.

Lawyer Shin Min-young (Judicial Research and Training Institute 41st class) is the author of some episodes of the drama.

Episodes 1, 3, 6, and 10 of 'Young-Woo Woo' are taken from the book 'Why Am I Defending Them', a book containing essays about the events that lawyer Shin experienced while working as a public defender

.

Lawyer Shin said, "As a lawyer, in the past, I couldn't watch court dramas because I couldn't prove it or go to an emotional trial without a logical discussion."

"I talk a lot with my fellow lawyers, 'Woo Young-woo'. It is said that the issues and lawsuits in reality are well reflected, and the details of the actual scene are well reflected. However, can a person with autism spectrum disorder become a lawyer? Surprisingly, my colleagues don't seem to talk much about it. There is an aspect that only starts to worry about it now."

Actually 'Woo Young-woo'

The fact that not only the legal principles that serve as the framework of the drama but also the trivial actions in the courtroom were well realized is partly because of the fact that lawyer Shin was in charge of the 'history'.

In response to Yoo In-sik's request to 'catch the details at the scene', he said, "When speaking in court, you should turn on the red light on the microphone before speaking," and it was reflected in the drama

. He laughed, saying, "Crying out 'I have an objection' was not reflected."

In reality, it is said that it is not an aggressive atmosphere that interrupts the other person while they are talking.

Even if there are objections, I tend to submit them as opinions later.

In the first episode, which tells the story of a grandmother who was charged with attempted murder by striking her husband with dementia on the head with an iron, Woo Young-woo is recognized by a senior lawyer by pointing out the inheritance problem under the Civil Code.

Lawyer Shin, who has actually resolved a similar case, said, "What I want to emphasize here is not a difference in ability, but a difference in perspective."

"From the point of view of trying to punish the grandmother, how the grandmother lives is not very important. From the grandmother's point of view, looking for one, one came out. This is a civil law issue. It can be difficult. If you change your point of view, you can see a way, but I don't think that it is a difference in ability. I think that the possibility opens up from the point of view of the accused and the client without giving up."

It is said that if a career drama is a hit, the number of applicants who want the job in that year will increase significantly.

When asked for advice to young people who dream of becoming lawyers like Woo Young-woo, he laughed, saying, "Lawyers are worried because there are too many lawyers. Don't be fooled by the drama."

“Nevertheless, I think being a lawyer is a very attractive profession. I am often evaluated for having a broad personality, but I don’t want to have a good job like this in the world because I do a job without receiving money, and I ask for money. It seems like a great blessing to be able to make a living doing this, but please take that into account as it's getting harder and harder. Haha."
