A man in his 70s who dumped 200 liters of diluted pesticide into a river in Seogwipo, Jeju has been arrested.

The Jeju Provincial Police Agency announced today (3rd) that they are investigating a man A in his 70s on charges of introducing diluted pesticides into a river (violation of the Water Environment Conservation Act).

According to the local police, Mr. A, a citrus farmer, is accused of mixing the remaining pesticide with groundwater after finishing the citrus tree control work on the 2nd and letting it flow from a high place to the warehouse stream in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si.

The local police believe that Mr. A committed this crime to dispose of the remaining pesticides by exploiting the fact that the river overflowed after the rainy season.

It is known that during the investigation, Mr. A made excuses, saying, "Other farmers throw away pesticides in the same way."

As a result of on-site inspection, the river was already turbid due to the influx of pesticides, and pesticides were deposited at the point where the flow rate was weak.

In particular, the Andeok Valley, which has high academic value and is famous for the habitat of mandarin ducks, a natural monument, is concerned about the spread of pollution in the lower reaches of the Janghangcheon Stream.

Jeon Jeon-sik, head of the Seogwipo Autonomous Police, said, "In order to protect the natural environment of Jeju, special attention is needed in managing pesticides."
