A traveler who entered Australia from Indonesia has been hit with a nearly $2,000 fine after authorities found he had two McMuffins and a croissant hidden in his luggage.

A substance detection dog alerted that the traveler was transporting food when entering Darwin Airport, authorities said.

"This is going to be the most expensive McDonald's meal this passenger has ever purchased,

" Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said.

Australia has tough biosanitary laws to protect agriculture from imported pests and diseases.

Authorities are currently on high alert due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Indonesia, so any import of meat from this country must be reviewed.

This disease poses no risk to humans, but is highly contagious to livestock.
