From July 12 to 25, "4 deaths occurred during orange or red heat wave vigilance", indicates the French public health agency in a national health-heat wave bulletin.

They were notified to the health agency by the labor inspection system.

 96% of the population has experienced at least one day of orange vigilance

The heat wave affected most of the territory, 96% of the population having experienced at least one day of orange vigilance and 16.5% one day of red vigilance.

This episode took hold for several departments in the South-East, with more than seven days of alert.

Public Health France did not give more details on the nature of these deaths, their precise date or the identity of the victims.

Contacted by AFP, the Ministry of Labor indicated "cannot make any comment" on this subject.

A new report at the end of the summer

At the heart of a summer when Europe has already suffered two periods of heat wave, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) pleaded on Monday for the adoption of a law which would set a maximum temperature at work on the continent. workers died of heatstroke in Spain last week. In France, a country that does not cap temperatures at work, 12 people died of heat-related work accidents in 2020," noted the ETUC . 

“Even if the heat wave ends, episodes of high heat can occur and it is important for everyone to protect themselves, without waiting for the first signs on health”, recalls Public Health France.

The agency has promised a "consolidated tally" of heat-related deaths by the end of the summer.
