Companies are also affected by increases in electricity prices, in particular telecom operators who use it in large quantities to supply networks or even store data.

"We consume two terawatt hours (TWh) per year," says Jean-Benoît Besset, director of network strategy at Orange in

Paris

.

This corresponds to 0.4% of total electricity consumption in France.

In a delicate context for the supply of energy, concern is the order of the day at Orange.

"We fear load shedding, that is to say voluntary cuts of entire areas by the network manager, to avoid a blackout", explains the manager.

The energy budget on the rise

Parade for Orange, supplying its data centers with batteries, but the operation is not without risk.

And above all, it is not sustainable.

The operator could also use diesel generators to guarantee the integrity of its network.

But the solution is not ecological.

“In 2021, soaring prices had already resulted in an additional cost of several hundred million euros on our energy budget.

For this year, we are already planning to double it, ”says the manager to the Ile-de-France daily.

However, the operator excludes increasing the price of its subscriptions.

On the other hand, Orange should limit its investments, to the detriment of the network.
