The Seoul National University research team launched an urgent investigation after alleging that a paper presented at a global academic conference was plagiarized from another paper.

The son of Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho was also listed as a co-author on the paper, but Lee said he would keep an eye on the results of the investigation.

Reporter Jeong Seong-jin reported.

Three days after the allegations of plagiarism were raised, Seoul National University began an investigation.

In general, it takes time to receive reports of plagiarism and decide whether to investigate, but this time, the investigation committee was quickly convened as the problem was serious.

First of all, the investigation committee decided to investigate all the Seoul National University researchers named in the thesis.

In addition to the first author, Researcher Kim Mo, the corresponding author, Professor Yun Seong-ro, and co-authors from Seoul National University were included in the investigation.

The investigation committee also said that it would investigate not only the allegations currently raised, but also broadly.

A Seoul National University official said that other papers may be included in the scope of the investigation as there is a point that it is necessary to verify the entire paper of Professor Yoon's research team.

Regarding the fact that his son was listed as one of the co-authors and the budget of the ministry was executed, Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho said that he would watch the investigation for now.

[Lee Jong-ho / Minister of Science and Technology Information and Communication: It seems appropriate to reveal and discuss the facts accurately through (Seoul National University) investigation.]

Professor Yoon and co-authors are of the position that the first author is responsible for correcting and submitting the final manuscript as a plagiarized paper.

However, it was confirmed that Professor Yoon and the first author submitted the thesis to the Information and Communication Planning and Evaluation Institute under the Ministry of Science and ICT as research results.

As Professor Yoon submitted his thesis as a research result without checking it properly, it seems difficult to avoid criticism of not only responsibility for plagiarism but also violation of research ethics.
