After President Yoon Seok-yeol ordered the training of semiconductor talents, the Ministry of Education is busy moving, but now the related equipment is worn out and breaks down in universities, and there are not enough professors to teach students.

There is also a saying that the method of awarding a degree should be simple and nurture talents quickly.

Reporter Jeong Da-eun reports.

This is the Seoul National University Semiconductor Research Center established in 1988.

Only over 500 PhDs in the semiconductor field have been produced.

However, the equipment in the laboratory is lacking, and the only ones that are there are old equipment.

Photo equipment for drawing wiring on semiconductor wafers was introduced in 2007, 15 years ago, and most of the other equipment is more than 20 years old.

[This is also over 20 years old.

(This equipment is also over 20 years old.)]

Breaks are frequent, and it may take several months to fix.

[Hyukjae Lee/Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Seoul National University: If it breaks down, we fix it and write it again, and if it breaks down, we cannot research and wait until we fix it again.]

Equipment to research the latest technology is not easy to introduce because of the price of billions of won.

[Solah Park / Graduate Student of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Seoul National University: At least 8 GPUs (graphic processing equipment) are needed to perform one task, but even in our lab alone, the total number of GPUs is less than 20, so…

.]

There is also a shortage of professors who can teach semiconductors professionally.

[Chul-seong Hwang / Chair Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Seoul National University: For example, in our Department of Materials Science and Engineering, there are 43 professors in our department, but there are one or two or three professors

who research orthodox semiconductors.]

It takes years to become available.

So, there are voices calling for expanding the nano degree that some universities are implementing.

The Nano Degree is a program that gives you a mini-degree by taking only three or four related subjects.

The Ministry of Education plans to come up with a comprehensive plan to support semiconductor manpower training by reviewing on-site opinions.
