“The universe is incredible”, “it's a beauty”… It's a festival of superlatives and a few doubts that greeted the publication on Twitter of a spectacular photo that would show the planet Saturn.

It would show the last photo taken by the Cassini probe before entering the planet's atmosphere and burning up, according to the account that posted it.

Since posting on Monday evening, the image has been retweeted more than 27,400 times and liked more than 204,600 times.

The image is actually the work of an artist which was posted on the Nasa website on April 6, 2017. “This artist concept shows an over the shoulder view of Cassini performing one of his great final plunges above Saturn,” the US space agency wrote in the caption to the image.

The last image sent by the Cassini probe is less spectacular: it is a monochrome view.

The probe is positioned in the direction of "the night side of the planet, illuminated by the light reflected from the rings", explains the American space agency.

The probe's mission ended on September 15, 2017, after 20 years in space, including 13 exploring Saturn.

Cassini took a total of 453,048 images and performed 294 orbits of the planet, providing a wealth of knowledge about Saturn and its moons.
