Technology Internet Explorer will stop operating on June 15
This June 15 is the date set for
Internet Explorer,
after more than 25 years of service, say goodbye.
Officially starting today, the browser will no longer be supported by its developers.
His has been
a chronicle of a death foretold
, something that in theory should not surprise anyone, since
Microsoft
has been announcing it for years, although the final thrust came from the general manager of
Microsoft Edge
Enterprise, Sean Lyndersay, when in Mayo noted that "the future of Internet Explorer in Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge."
The problem is that in countries like
Spain
, this update, very common in the computer field, in which a five-year-old program is already old,
seems to have caught us by surprise.
Specifically, to this day,
many Public Administration procedures
continue to depend on this browser that has gone from dying to deceased.
A software that will stop
receiving updates
, patches and any kind of improvements, even those that have to do with cybersecurity.
A problem that directly affects the Spanish electronic administration.
"The end of
Internet Explorer
and its consequences have been known for at least five years and we have been asking for years that the developments are
compatible with the rest of the browsers
," they explain from the Central Independent Union and Civil Servants (CSIF).
"The
different administrations
, in theory, have had time to adapt their programs and applications for internal procedures and those used by citizens in their procedures. It could be the case, hopefully not, that some
administration has not yet adapted
its applications and If there is a problem, we understand that it would be in the older applications and could be corrected", they explain.
From CSIF, they assure that as of tomorrow, they will ensure that this process is completed normally both in the SEPE, as well as in the
Social Security
, Justice, local and regional Administration, "without there being damage to citizens and the workforce, which are those who in the end always show their faces when a person is related
to the Administration
".
Microsoft
, aware that its decision can cause many obstacles, has launched a 'lifeline' to all companies that have not made the transition to other browsers.
First of all, it has maintained the long-term servicing channel (LTSC), in
Windows 10
, designed for devices such as medical imaging devices, industrial robots or aircraft on-board computers, which do not need to be
updated
in the next few years .
years.
The problem is that this solution is designed for devices that perform
highly specialized functions
, not for computers for administrative use, since it also disables many functions of these machines.
It has also enabled an
Internet Explorer
(IE) mode in Edge, its natural replacement.
In this way, the same apps and sites that work only in Internet Explorer 11 can be opened in
Microsoft Edge
with this mode.
In fact, some companies in our country that work on developing automatisms, designed to be integrated into administrations, confirm that they are already
developing directly for Edge
in compatibility mode with Internet Explorer.
Electronic administration, on the verge of obsolescence
"In my company we were informed yesterday that many
computer applications
, throughout the summer, are going to stop working with Internet Explorer or at least they are going to stop having support. Therefore, they force our clients to go to
Edge
in mode of compatibility with IE", explains G. Rodríguez, a computer scientist who has spent years automating processes for different companies.
"A lot
of government applications
are written in Java and are only compatible with Internet Explorer today," he says.
According to Rodríguez, the problem is that when the user accesses an application or some function of the website, for example, from the
Treasury
, they are 'calling' a web application usually made in Java, because it was designed many years ago.
This programming language is key to the
operation of the Public Administration
and does not work in other browsers.
"The problem is that most browsers abandoned Java because it proved to be
vulnerable
. However, it is still essential when carrying out some of
the Administration's procedures,
" points out Andrés Gómez, a computer specialist in business digitization.
Some of these procedures are the
digital signature
, which was developed with applets of this programming language, designed to be included in an
HTML Web
document .
A system for which there was no alternative until a few years ago, however, since it has
not been updated
(or redesigned), the user still needs Internet Explorer to interact with the electronic signature in Java.
It is true that some alternatives
have been promoted, such
as the Cl@ve systems and, above all, Autofirm@, but they have not yet been implemented in all portals, both regional and national.
Nor in
internal processes
, as confirmed by Interior sources, who affirm that they still have terminals that work with
Windows XP
.
"Many of the applications that are still used and that even today
do not have alternatives
, were stopped updating because the companies that develop them no longer work with Internet Explorer, it already requires a specific configuration, while for
Chrome, Brave and Mozilla
is the same," says Rodríguez.
Emphasizing that precisely
Microsoft
goes to Edge because it uses a Chromium engine, which has the same compatibility as
Google Chrome
.
"It was believed that the Microsoft standard, from the time when digital procedures were designed, was going to last for many years, but that has not been the case.
The issue has been left behind
and it is probably now up to more than one to do overtime to migrate at full speed", Gómez underlined for his part.
Although as confirmed by sources consulted from the
Administration
, from systems, support managers and computer incidents, work is already being done to
update these pages.
However, they assure that the migration, even
though the servers are new
, must be carried out slowly and tested, since they are applications that can cause, for example, that employment contracts cannot be formalized.
"The incidents have slowed us down, we have had to
change everything in five months
, in fact, in some Ministries it is already difficult to find something older than 2019. The problem lies in the
outdated websites
," they insist, referring to the cyberattacks it suffered. SEP last year.
