From next year, three out of six foreign language high schools in Seoul will no longer be able to take English courses.

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education today (8th), Daeil Foreign Language High School has decided not to recruit new students for the English department from the 2023 school year.

Instead of abolishing the existing two classes of English department, we plan to increase the German department and Spanish department by one class.

We plan to abolish 3 classes of English department at Hanyeong Foreign High School and reduce the Chinese department from 3 classes to 2 classes.

Instead, German, French, Japanese, and Spanish courses will be increased by one class each.

Daewon Foreign Language High School has already eliminated the English department this year.

The English Department of Foreign Language High School was popular with students preparing to study abroad in the mid to late 2000s.

However, as the English section of the College Scholastic Ability Test changed to an absolute evaluation and the number of students who were fluent in English increased due to the increase in English training opportunities, its popularity declined.

Some believe that the increased preference for science among top-ranked students has had an impact on the competition rate of foreign language high schools and the decline in the popularity of English departments.
