A 40-year-old man who assaulted a co-worker to the point of paralysis has been sentenced to prison.

The 2nd Criminal Division of the Jeju District Court (Chief Judge Jae-kyung Jin) announced today (23rd) that a 43-year-old man accused of serious injury was sentenced to five years in prison.

According to the charges, on October 27, 2020, at around 11 pm, Mr. A had a fight with his co-worker, Mr. B, in his 40s, at an entertainment pub in Jeju City.

Mr. A is charged with assaulting Mr. B while knocking him down on the floor, and even when Mr. B lost consciousness, he is accused of hitting his face and the back several times.

B suffered severe brain damage due to A's assault, and even received emergency surgery, but in the end, his limbs are paralyzed due to a brain lesion disorder.

In addition, Mr. A has a history of receiving criminal punishment for similar crimes several times in 2010, including being sentenced to prison for assaulting and killing a friend who was drinking with him.

In the courtroom, Mr. A denied the charges, saying, "I only grabbed Mr. B by the neck and did not hit him with all my might."

He also pointed out, "As a result of this crime, the victim has a disability that is difficult to heal and is unable to engage in economic activities at all.

He continued, "In the past, he committed the same type of crimes several times, and one of the victims died, but since he committed a similar crime again, we set the sentence higher than the recommended upper limit based on the sentencing standards."
