Since last year, a law has been enacted to punish those who spread false information that distorts the 5.18 Democratization Movement.

Then I found out how things changed.

In the end, the May 18 Distortion Punishment Act was enforced in January of last year.

Dissemination of false information is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to 50 million won.

I received the status of malicious rumors from the May 18 Memorial Foundation.

The first statistics actually came out after the law came into force, and the number of rumors secured reached 490 this year.

The theory of armed riots that Gwangju citizens first violently seized weapons and the military had no choice but to fire was 71.6%, North Korean soldiers were involved in 13.9%, and others 14.5%.

In particular, the foundation said recently that rumors to the effect that people of merit received excessive compensation have been increasing frequently.

I will go over this part.

In fact, the team checked the compensation status, and the 5/18 people of merit received an average of 43 million won in the form of a lump sum, while other people of merit received about 320,000 to 3 million won in the form of annuity every month.

Since the payment varies depending on the type of meritorious person, it is unreasonable to say with certainty that it is too much or too little.

If you go to the website of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, you can directly check the compensation method and scale for each person of merit.

The May 18th Foundation also said that after the law came into force, 26 rumors were collected and requested to be investigated by the police.

When I asked the police, the answer came that there has not been a case of punishment under the 5.18 Distortion Punishment Act.
