The financial authorities and the insurance industry have offered a reward of up to 30 million won to eradicate excessive treatment for cataract surgery, which is considered the main culprit of medical insurance leaks.

The Life Insurance Association and the Non-life Insurance Association announced that they will operate a special reporting period for cataract surgery insurance fraud from today (18th) to next month in collaboration with the Financial Supervisory Service.

The plan is to give a special reward to someone who reports a cataract surgery insurance fraud, separate from the reward for reporting by existing insurance companies.

It is said that this is a measure in response to a surge in claims for indemnity insurance as so-called out-of-print marketing is on the rise, with some ophthalmologists encouraging non-essential cataract surgery, saying, 'Payment of indemnity insurance for cataract surgery is becoming more difficult'.

Police investigations are conducted on ophthalmology reported by the reporter during the special reporting period, and if the reporter's active cooperation is recognized during the investigation, a reward is paid.

Depending on the type of informant, the reward is set from 1 million won to a maximum of 30 million won.

Reports can be made through the Financial Supervisory Service, the call center of each insurance company, or the website.
