During this East Coast wildfire, houses near the forest were particularly damaged.

However, there are houses that have survived the fire even though the fire has spread to the vicinity of the house.

This is thanks to the installation of emergency fire extinguishing facilities after the Sokcho Goseong wildfire three years ago.

Reporter Jo Jae-geun covered the scene.

Goran village in Donghae City, where a forest fire that started in Gangneung at dawn on the 5th swept over the mountain.

Five houses were burned down.

However, there are many houses that are not damaged even though they are directly adjacent to the forest.

It was thanks to an emergency fire extinguisher installed nearby.

As the fire approached, residents brought a hose from here and sprayed water to stop the fire from spreading.

[Kim Young-hyeon / Goran-dong, Donghae-si: I couldn't go close to how bad it was after burning and acting, but because there was a fire hydrant, I was able to turn it off a bit because the water from the hydrant ran out for a long time.] There were

also many places in neighboring villages that protected houses with emergency fire extinguishers.

[Lee Bong-hee / Goran-dong, Donghae-si: Because of this, our two houses were saved.

Without it, we would just look at it and be chased away.

(The house next door and two?) Yes, that's true.]

This emergency fire extinguishing system started to be installed after the 2019 Sokcho Goseong wildfire, and 820 of them have been installed on the east coast of Gangwon-do in the past two years.

Fire hoses were installed on hoses over 100m long, so it was able to prevent further damage when the fire engine did not arrive.

[Kim In-soo / Donghae-si Manu-dong: I couldn’t turn it off with anything else.

Because the fire was too strong.

There is no water around here.

So, it was a little dangerous for the house to go around the fire hydrant or this area.] As a

result of the investigation by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security in 2020, 2,880 emergency fire extinguishers that need to be installed on the east coast of Gangwon were identified.

An additional 2,060 units should be installed in the future, but this year, the project was halted because government funds were not allocated.

Additional installation is required as soon as possible to prevent repeated wildfire damage.
