Google announced on Thursday that it has rolled out a bomb alert system for all Ukrainians with an Android phone, reports the Huffington Post.

This functionality, designed “at the request and with the help of the Ukrainian government”, thus allows rapid reporting in the event of an air raid in the context of the invasion of the country by Russia.

Tragically, millions of people in Ukraine now rely on air strike alerts to try get to safety.

The developed system "uses our low latency alert mechanism that we designed for earthquake alerts" explained on Twitter Dave Burke, Google's vice president of engineering for Android.

The official, however, said that this alert "in addition to the country's existing air raid warning systems and is based on the alerts already issued by the Ukrainian government".

Support for refugees

Google had taken the decision, a few days after the war, to suspend the mapping activities of Google Maps in Russia and Ukraine, in order to avoid any misuse, despite its role in the first hours of the conflict.

With this new system, Google affirms its support for Ukrainians, explaining that “tragically, millions of people in Ukraine now rely on air raid alerts”.

The firm has also announced that it will support the 2.6 million Ukrainian refugees identified by the UN in its own way.

Indeed, on Google's services, “hoteliers from countries neighboring Ukraine can indicate on their business profile whether they offer free or discounted accommodation to refugees.

And local businesses can use their profile on Search and Maps to offer various services and assistance to refugees from Ukraine,” the California-based company explained.
