Researchers from the University of Florida claim that the use of the social network TikTok, particularly popular with adolescents, would promote an upsurge in nervous tics within this segment of the population.
According to our colleagues from PhonAndroid, a study carried out on twenty volunteers, aged 11 to 21, shows that these symptoms worsened during the pandemic and successive confinements.
Of 20 teenagers with this condition, seventeen said that the frequency of their tics had increased since using the app.
Half believe that social media has made these worries worse.
The severity of the tics evaluated at 5 out of 6
The researchers asked participants to rate the severity of their tics on a scale of 0 to 6. Those who felt they had reasonable use of the social network answered 4. Those who significantly increased their time of use during the pandemic answered 5.
According to the
Metro
media , more research should be conducted to identify the stressors responsible for triggering severe tics such as sudden sounds or uncontrollable movements.
Already in October 2021, a study had claimed that the use of TikTok increased the risk in adolescents of developing Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.
