Ironic, thoughtful and aware that

Official Competition

is a film that can connect with the public

and make them have a good time,

Óscar Martínez

(Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1949) enjoys talking about his work on it.

"The humor I like best is the one where the actors aren't being funny," he says.

And it seems like a perfect declaration of intent to present

a black comedy in which we see Antonio Banderas

in the skin of a "rude, coarse, banal, snobbish, rudimentary" actor

and Penelope Cruz

as a "crazy and perverse" filmmaker , in the words of Martinez.

In his native Argentina, Óscar Martínez has developed his career so successfully as to be considered one of the country's great actors.

In Spain, many discovered him in

Relatos Salvajes

, laughed with him in

El Ciudadano Ilustre

and he was a familiar face in Spanish productions such as

Toc toc .

or

Live Twice

.

In

Official Competition

, Óscar Martínez shares the spotlight with Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz.

Both Martínez and Banderas give life to actors

(very different from each other) at the service of a film director (Cruz) who accepts a commission from a millionaire (José Luis Gómez) to shoot a film.

The rehearsals will become

a cluster of surreal situations in which the traumas, egos and hobbies

of people who have worked in the cinema for a long time will come to light.

And to whom fame turns them upside down.

A 'VERY SPECIAL' JOB

"

We had a lot of fun doing it.

So much so that we had to stop at many moments during the shoot," explains this artist who just received Spanish nationality a few months ago.

About his role in

Official Competition

, which we see as a veteran method actor who collides head-on with the superstar that Banderas brings to life, the Argentine explains: "

my character has a degree of solemnity and rigidity regarding the work of an actor that I don't share.

But he's also very resentful. I'm very clear that this profession can change you in many ways. When I was young I saw many successful actors who had become bitter and I wondered how that had happened to them. "

THE DEMONS OF THE ACTORS

"Nobody conceives of himself as a pervert or a son of a bitch. We all think we have reasons.

The bad thing is when bad faith intervenes. That's when we can cause damage," says Óscar Martínez when asked about the evil that the characters of

Official Competition

could have .

"In this film, the essence of the actor's work is not revealed.

It is the background of what is told and, in fact, you never get to see the filming of the film itself. It does talk about the competition between professionals of any kind.

The ego and competitiveness are very much in life.

And in certain solitary activities such as writing it is much worse... There, there are more egos."

The film, which could be seen at the Venice Festival, exudes bad milk.

And

it has certain details that could refer to certain real actors, actresses or directors...

if you think about it a little.

Martínez does not clarify those parallels.

Only those that have to do with the character of Antonio Banderas: "As I know the directors, when I read the script I asked them how Antonio was going to take his character because of certain references made about him.

Antonio is a very intelligent guy and even suggested things to be added to the script.

Not that he plays himself. Far from it. But it's good that he laughs at aspects that could be attributed to him."

THE ENERGY OF PENÉLOPE CRUZ AND ANTONIO BANDERAS

Regarding the energy given off by two actors (and friends) like Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz, the interpreter of

Relatos Salvajes

explains that "

Antonio and Penélope have known each other for a long time

, despite the fact that they have barely worked together. I felt a warmth and generosity huge on his part. That made things a lot easier."

Although, when asked about the origin of the project, Óscar Martínez reveals a little secret.

"

A couple of years ago, Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz saw

El ciudad ilustre

at their house and they sent me messages at that time that were so flattering that I couldn't reveal them right now.

Some time later I coincided with them in a tribute they paid to Pilar Bardem to whom Javier invited me. And in that meeting Penelope talked to me a lot about the directors of that film, who are the same as

Official Competition

. When I returned to Buenos Aires I told them about it and what is now being released in theaters began to take shape. .".
