• Samsung's Galaxy S22 Ultra is launched and sold from 1259 euros.

  • This large 6.8-inch smartphone emphasizes its screen quality, stylus, and improved photo and video capabilities.

  • Among them, its possibilities of zooming and video self-portraits remain the most astonishing.

Take a Galaxy S21 Ultra, mix with a Galaxy Note, change the design and… say hello to the Galaxy S22 Ultra!

With its new high-end smartphone launched a few weeks after the S22 and S22 +, Samsung is firing on all cylinders.

The flagship of the Galaxy S fleet thus seems to want to appropriate the best of a manufacturer who, moreover, seems to have a little trouble reinventing itself.

A stylus like the Galaxy Note

To fill its bag with new features, the Galaxy S22 Ultra draws on the Galaxy Note range (dedicated to productivity).

No longer appearing on radar screens, it seems to be reincarnated here by the presence of an S-Pen stylus.

Housed at the bottom left in the body of the smartphone, it will be a little restrictive to extract if you are right-handed, but still very practical for taking notes.

If the terminal is on standby, extracting the S-Pen automatically launches the Samsung Notes application.

What to be reactive in meeting!

The most creative can use the Penup app to draw, color and even create animations... Using a stylus with a smartphone is definitely a new exercise if you've never tried it, but you can quickly take advantage, the feeling of a real pen being not far away and the notes taken instantly usable, transferable…

The best screen on the market

Another resource that Samsung uses here is its know-how for screens.

Amoled, WQHD + (3080 x 1440 pixels) and a diagonal of 6.8 inches (as for the S21 Ultra), that of the S22 Ultra is undoubtedly without equivalent on the market.

Its exceptional quality, with dark contrasts and radiant luminosity, never ceases to flatter the retina.

Suffice to say that watching videos on this terminal is a constantly renewed pleasure.

The slightly curved side edges of the smartphone contribute to the pleasure of the grip while giving the impression that the image is borderless.

Here, in fact, the screen occupies 90% of the front of the terminal.

We do not find this feeling on the other two S22 which have just been released, their screen being completely flat.

For audio, the 3.5 mm mini-jack is an old memory, but in the absence of Bluetooth headphones or earphones, the S22 Ultra includes two good stereo speakers.

Enough to enjoy a few episodes of your favorite TV series or a few game levels on an adaptive 120 Hz screen whose responsiveness is supported by the manufacturer's new Exynos 2200 chip.

Nightography is out

Finally, the photo * historically excellent at Samsung, tries with the S22 Ultra to find a new argument.

The South Korean manufacturer named it the “Nightography”.

Behind this in-house marketing name, Samsung boasts of its smartphone's very good ability to photograph and film at night.

It's a fact.

But the person who will be able to see really notable developments in the face of what an S21 Ultra was already capable of producing in this area is in great difficulty.

Weighted with larger photosites, the smartphone sensors are able to store more light.

For their part, the algorithms at work undoubtedly soften the noise more (the graininess in the image in low light).

The zoom surprises in optical and digital

The most surprising thing about this S22 Ultra is its ability to zoom and zoom well.

Up to 10x in optical, the smartphone remains very comfortable in 30x digital as evidenced by the photos below.

What open new perspectives in a world where competitors do not yet come close to Samsung.

Finally, another new playground is Portrait mode and its artistic blur behind the subject, which is available here for video self-portraits.

Combined with impeccable image processing, the 40-megapixel front sensor manages to produce quite stunning sequences with a perfectly cropped subject in a blurred moving environment.

The video remains one of the good surprises of this S22 Ultra.

Able to film up to 8K at 24 frames / second (which has no other interest than to make good edits in 4K), the smartphone is distinguished by its great precision, its HDR10 + compatibility which takes care of the details in high and low light, but also very effective stabilization.

Sold from 1259 euros in 128 GB (there is a 1 TB version at 1659 euros on the Samsung site), the Galaxy S22 Ultra remains a racing beast.

But a beast of a race that struggles despite everything to totally surprise, if not marginally.

Sumptuous screen, new productivity capabilities using its stylus and increased level in photo and video remain its assets.

We would also have liked to see the autonomy of this smartphone which does not exceed the day of use with its reinforced 5,000 mAh battery.

Significant progress, of course, but which testifies that Samsung, like undoubtedly some of its competitors, may have reached a technological glass ceiling.

* Main sensor 108 megapixels (wide-angle; f/1.8) + 12 megapixels (ultra-wide-angle; f/2.2) + 10 megapixel telephoto lens with x3” optical zoom (f/2.4) + 10 megapixel telephoto lens with x10” optical zoom (f / 4.9) + 40 megapixel front camera (f / 2.2).
