Videos on TikTok might last longer.

Increased to three minutes since July 2021, the length of the videos could reach five or even ten minutes.

The social network is testing the two solutions with certain users, reports Wired relayed by Phonandroid.

Behind this change, there are financial and strategic reasons.

Increasing the length of videos also means increasing revenue.

With the stretching of viewing time, advertisers will be able to multiply appearances and will have to checkout more often.

"Ultimately, if five-minute videos help TikTok advance its average watch time by even a few seconds, traditional advertisers might feel more free, and the world of tech is always looking for the biggest possible income, ”explains to our colleagues Karyn Spencer, expert in social networks.

Compete with YouTube

But behind this extension, TikTok pursues another goal: to compete with YouTube more frankly.

Videos limited to three minutes as is currently the case do not allow this.

"Given that YouTube is the second largest search engine, even capturing a fraction of their audience could have massive positive ramifications for TikTok," said Brendan Gahan, partner at advertising agency Mekanism.

It remains to be seen whether users will follow.

Brevity seems to be in order on the Chinese social network, to such an extent videos of more than a minute worry users according to data collected by TikTok.

Last year, on YouTube, 12% of videos were less than a minute long.
