• With metronomic regularity, Samsung presented its new premium smartphones on February 9, the Galaxy S22, S22 + and S22 Ultra, sold from 859 euros and launched on March 11 and February 25 respectively.

  • If the design of these terminals hardly changes compared to the previous generation, the manufacturer boasts an almost perfect photo and video experience.

  • The Galaxy S22 Ultra is the most innovative of the three, with up to 10x true optical zoom.

2022, the year of the Galaxy S22, has indeed begun for Samsung, which unveiled this Wednesday, February 9 during its “

 Unpacked

 ” conference its new

flagships

, i.e. its premium smartphones.

They are available in three references: Galaxy S22, S22 + and S22 Ultra.

These 5G and Wifi 6 terminals can already be found for pre-order on the manufacturer's website in many colors and with different configurations*.

The Galaxy S22 and S22+ will launch on March 11, while the S22 Ultra will precede them with an announced February 25 release.

Beautiful and resistant

Although photos of the new toys from the South Korean manufacturer had been widely leaked, what is striking is their design, which changes very little.

Flatter than the S21s, which had opted for a slightly domed look, the S22s regained a certain sobriety.

But their photo matrix has not changed place and is placed at the top, left on the back of smartphones.

Available in three Dynamic Amoled 2x screen sizes (the quintessence of screens at Samsung**), there is only the Galaxy S22 Ultra screen whose edges are curved.

All three smartphones sit on an aluminum frame and feature Gorilla Glass Victus+ front/back protection.

They are also IP68 standard and resist immersion up to 1.50 meters for thirty minutes.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra even includes a stylus, housed in its structure.

Photo and video boosted

The real changes would be inside according to Samsung which, with its S22, claims to redefine the codes in photo and video on smartphones.

A speech already heard many times, and which is here associated with some technical promises that should be verified during a future test.

In addition to increasingly sensitive sensors***, let's mention for the photo the adaptive pixel system developed by the manufacturer.

Thus, it is possible to shoot in 50 megapixels with the S22 and S22 + and 108 megapixels with the S22 Ultra to obtain extremely sharp and precise photos.

But if good light conditions are not met, the definition will automatically switch to 12 megapixels to let more light in and be sure to get the best shot possible.

For night photos, Samsung also mentions photo sensors with larger photosites on its three smartphones, again letting in more light for bright shots.

Video is no exception.

In addition to the possibility of filming in Super HDR, Samsung adds 12-bit HDR to "capture sixty-four times more colors", according to the manufacturer.

Here again, our future tests will reveal to us if this gain is real, but we can imagine immortalizing ever more nuanced images.

True optical zoom up to 10x

But what really attracts is the Galaxy S22 Ultra's "continuous" optical zoom.

Or rather the double zoom.

If the manufacturer's high-end smartphone has, like its two younger brothers, an optical zoom of up to x3, it adds a second optical zoom of up to x10.

Its vocation is to take over on the first zoom when you want to approach beyond the x3 of your subject.

Thus, this double zoom is similar to a real optical zoom with a system of moving lenses.

Our first manipulations are extremely promising and we can already see all the benefits of such a coupling for successful holiday photos, for example, by photographing a distant subject or a detail on a monument.

Powered by Samsung's new Exynos 2200 processor, the Galaxy S22 should offer better battery life, but the manufacturer does not communicate specific usage times.

The S22 incorporates a 3700 mAh battery and is compatible with 25 watt charging.

Count 4500 mAh for the S22 + and 5000 mAh for the S22 Ultra, both compatible with 45 Watts fast charging.

Still, the charging blocks will not be in the box and will have to be purchased as an option.

An effort for the planet by avoiding supplying chargers that we already have?

This is an argument that can be heard.

Another is that put forward by Samsung, which indicates that it has integrated plastic residues and in particular fishing nets from the oceans into the manufacture of its smartphones.

But we do not know in what proportions.

A final interesting point for the environment consists of the trade-in offers for the purchase of one of the S22s which can reach up to 200 euros.

Old smartphones, connected watches and tablets that you no longer use (see the brands concerned on the manufacturer's website) can thus be transformed into substantial reduction offers if you want to equip yourself with an S22 before these obsolete products are recycled and recovered.

Enough to empty your cupboards and equip yourself anew… if it is really necessary.
