February 9, 1887 was born the legendary Soviet military leader during the Civil War, Vasily Chapaev. During the First World War, he, a native of a peasant family, rose to the rank of sergeant major. For military merits, Chapaev was awarded three St. George's crosses and the St. George medal. In 1917, he joined the Bolsheviks, a year later he was appointed commander of the Red Army and proved to be a talented commander. After his death, Chapaev became widely known in the USSR thanks to the book of his colleague Dmitry Furmanov and the film of the same name by the Vasiliev brothers.
