The dislike feature, which was available to a select group of tweeters in a limited number of countries, is being rolled out to the general public worldwide.
Twitter started testing downvotes in 2021 with web users.
The platform now plans to extend this feature to iOS and Android users and should be visible to everyone.
Several tests
Initially, during its tests, Twitter offered the “up arrow” and “down arrow” buttons to check which was most appreciated by users and for which content.
"This experiment also revealed that downvoting is the most common way people use to flag content they don't want to see," Twitter said.
Thus, the experiment revealed that most people used the "downvote" button when they found a tweet that was offensive, irrelevant, or both.
Twitter says it has "learned a lot about the types of responses you don't find relevant."
To the point of now extending this test to as many people as possible, on the Web and soon on iOS and Android, in order to improve “the quality of conversations on Twitter”.
A button intended mainly for research
The company announced last Thursday the extension of the test on a global scale, while specifying that it will not display the number of downvotes on tweets.
The button will not be visible only to the author of the tweet, but this functionality will be limited, at least for now, to only replies.
The tweets themselves are therefore not affected by this new feature.
For Twitter, it is above all a tool designed to better understand “what people think is valuable in a conversation”.
Initially, the downvote button will only be available on the desktop version of Twitter.
But according to the platform, its deployment on iOS and Android will follow very quickly.
