Devices After two years of pandemic, Apple adds the possibility of using FaceID with a mask
Apple will
transform the
iPhone
into a point of sale
(POS) terminal
this year, although for now only in the
US.
A future software update will allow small businesses or street vendors to use the phone's
NFC
reader to accept payments from a
contactless
card or from another phone.
The function, which will be known as
Tap to Pay,
will not depend on Apple's own app or the
Apple Pay service,
although it is compatible with this payment platform and other virtual wallets.
It is a set of
APIs
(anchors that developers can use to access functions within the operating system) that third-party companies can use in their applications.
The first company to use this feature will be
Stripe,
a popular payment processing platform.
Thanks to Stripe, the service will be integrated into the Shopify app
, which is used by many small businesses and online companies
in the US to manage their business.
Apple ensures that later other companies and payment gateways may also join the service.
Since these apps require registration and proof that the company is legitimate, the
risk
that a phone can be used fraudulently to accept unwanted payments
is low,
as is the case with conventional POS terminals.
Apple also points out that the other great advantage of the service will be privacy.
"All transactions made with Tap to Pay are encrypted and processed using the secure enclave of the phone's processor, and as with Apple Pay,
Apple does not know what is being purchased or who is buying it," they
explain from the company.
Tap to Pay will initially be available only on the iPhone, which limits the type of scenarios in which it can work as an alternative to a conventional POS.
Still, Apple plans to roll out the feature to all of its stores this year.
The service will require an iPhone XS, released in 2018, or a later model to work,
as they are the only devices that have a built-in NFC reader.
