The Japanese giant Sony continues to ride on the success of its PlayStation 5. As of December 31, 2021, the group would have sold 17.2 million copies of its next-gen console.
That's almost 5 million more than its rival, Microsoft, which would have ended the year around 12 million next-gen consoles delivered.
The American giant does not communicate any figures, however these are only estimates.
Despite the lack of big exclusives for the end of 2021, Sony is performing well.
Its console remains almost permanently out of stock, with queues lasting several months in some stores.
A digital offer soon to be redesigned
On the digital side, the PS Plus offer hardly changes any more.
During the last quarter, Sony painstakingly added 600,000 new subscribers – for a total of now 49 million subscribers to the PS Plus offer, which gives access to online gaming and a few handpicked titles.
Sony would however prepare its response to Gamepass with a new offer that would combine PS Plus and PS Now, its subscription gaming service.
Said offer would thus compete with Microsoft's Gamepass Ultimate.
The rumor is currently talking about some big changes at this level with the potential addition of retro compatible titles and new features in the PS Now catalog, which could strengthen the offer and make it more attractive.
Because if Sony currently dominates the market for next-gen consoles, its digital offers are struggling to seduce against those of its rival, which retains a big head start.
