A group belonging to a waste disposal company was arrested by the police for collecting 95 million won in waste import fees by manipulating the loaded waste to weigh less.

The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency announced today (26th) that they had handed over three waste treatment company operators and two vehicle drivers, including public officials, to the prosecution on charges of fraud.

They are accused of defrauding 95 million won in waste import fees by manipulating the weight of the loaded waste while going to and from the waste landfill in Saenggok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Busan, from March to July last year.

At the entrance to the landfill, they used a tactic to ensure that vehicles loaded with waste were weighed less than they actually were as they passed the weighbridge where they were weighed.

After reducing the weight of waste by moving the front or rear wheels of the vehicle off the weighbridge, the weight measurement card was hung on a selfie stick and contacted with the reader.

The landfill site can pass normally only when the vehicle loaded with waste gets on the weighbridge and recognizes the card.

It is said that the hand of the card reader cannot be reached when the vehicle leaves the designated location, but it is known that the use of tools such as a selfie stick is helpless.

It was confirmed that these were deceived to weigh about 1,600 tons of waste less than 600 times.

In particular, it was reported that one of the operators of the waste treatment company was a public official working in a local government in Busan.

This public official was sentenced to a fine of 3 million won in the first trial in July last year for being handed a bribe to an employee of the Environment Corporation in charge of monitoring or cracking down while operating a waste company secretly.

The police arrested them by checking the status of waste imports through closed circuit (CC) TV, etc.

A police official said, "Even if only a part of the waste vehicle is put on the weighbridge to reduce the weight, we have confirmed the problem of passing the weighbridge normally."
