Consumer spending on application stores for phones around the world in 2021 reached $ 170 billion, according to the recently released “Annie” report, titled “The State of Mobile Phones 2022”, which provides a comprehensive view of the application economy, across systems: “iOS” Google Play and Android application stores in China, according to a report published by TechCrunch.

The ANI report stated that app downloads on an annual basis declined by 5% in 2021. Growth was also largely affected by emerging markets such as: India, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Egypt.

Another thing that is clear is that consumers now spend more time on apps than they do watching TV, in many cases.

The report indicated that the average American watched 3.1 hours on television per day, for example, but that during the past year, Americans spent about 4.1 hours on their phones.

And they are not the most users of these phones in the world.

In markets such as Brazil, Indonesia, and South Korea, average mobile app use increased over five hours in 2021.

Top 10 Markets

In the top 10 markets using mobile applications, the average time an individual spends on mobile applications exceeded four hours and 48 minutes in 2021, an increase of 30% over what was the case in 2019. This includes rates of use of these applications in: Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Argentina, France, Germany, and China combined.

Most of this time is spent on social media and video applications, which account for seven minutes out of every 10 minutes an individual spends on the phone during 2021.

Entertainment applications appeal to Generation Z, which has been born since the spread of the Internet in the world, especially in the United States.

The most popular applications used by Generation Z are: Instagram, Tik Tok, Snapchat, and Netflix.

Consumer spending

The increase in the time that an individual spends on applications directly affects what the consumer spends. In the United States, the effects of “Corona” forced the consumer to shop, work, learn, play and entertain at home during 2021. This led to a significant growth in consumer spending, according to the “Annie” report, as it added 43 billion dollars in 2021, or 10 billions more, compared to 2020, or an annual growth rate of 30%.
