According to data collected by W3Techs, WordPress has grown from more than 10 million sites in 2011 to 40 million sites in 2021. However, this rise should be put into perspective.

More than a blogging platform

WordPress is by far the most popular content management system (CMS).

Today, there are more than 58,000 plugins, more than 8,000 WordPress themes.

The countries that use WordPress the most are South Africa, Iran, Israel, and Spain.

The ".blog" domain has the largest CMS market share, at 92.2%.

The market share of the “.news” domain represents 87.1%.

Conversely, the least used domain by WordPress is the “.mil”.

A victim of its own success, WordPress has become a prime target for cyber attacks.

According to a December Wordfence post, 1.6 million WordPress sites suffered 13.7 million attacks in 36 hours from 16,000 different IP addresses.

In early December, a Wordfence investigation revealed an attack targeting more than a million WordPress sites.

Measuring the "meaningful web"

WordPress data is provided by W3Techs.

The site tracks usage statistics for web technologies, including CMS, operating systems and web hosting providers.

To compile its statistics, W3Techs uses the list of the 10 million most visited websites by Alexa.

This is completed by the list of the 1 million most visited sites by Tranco.

Not all websites are counted because there are a large number of domains that are unused or used for questionable purposes.

Thus, basing yourself on the Alexa ranking is a good way to focus on really active sites.

This selection reveals that, while impressive, WordPress' performance is regressing.

WordPress is used by 65.2% of all websites known to have content management system.

But if we count only the sites that use a CMS and classified in the top 1,000,000, the rate drops to 64.3%.

The percentage then drops below 60% for sites classified in the Top 100,000 and drops to 50% for those in the Top 1,000.
