The Popcorn Time adventure is over.

The pirate streaming platform has announced its closure.

An email was sent this Tuesday by the developers behind the site to numerous reporters to announce the news, reports Capital.

The site now displays an image on which the logo has been modified.

The box of popcorn is no longer smiling, but dead.

To symbolize this death, the eyes of the popcorn have become crosses.

We also see the words "RIP", for "rest in peace", in French.

A graph showing that the service has had less and less interest over the years is also displayed.

"Pirate Netflix"

Popcorn Time was launched in 2014. Nicknamed "the pirate Netflix", the platform allowed access to video content without paying the rights.

Unlike other hacking sites, the interface was streamlined, modeled on Netflix and other paid streaming platforms.

In 2015, Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, warned investors against Popcorn Time.

He said: “Piracy remains one of our biggest competitors.

".

Popcorn Time has already been taken offline, especially in 2015 under pressure from the American film industry, but being reborn in other forms, as Les Numériques indicates.

For their part, the developers of the pirate platform explained that the service did not host any files but put forward torrent file links.

Rights holders could be relieved by the abandonment of PopCorn Time.

But it is not that simple.

If the official version of PopCorn Time bows out, the site could reappear again in a few days.

The platform code is still freely accessible on GitHub.
