The Japanese giant Canon has announced the retirement of its models of professional quality SLR cameras.

The company will no longer design a new model and will simply cease production of SLRs in its factories.

The EOS-1D X Mark III, released in 2020, will be the last of its kind.

While Canon is retiring the professional SLR to develop mirrorless models, commonly known as hybrids, it is not completely abandoning the sector.

The company will continue to offer entry-level and mid-range SLRs to consumers.

The SLR remains a very popular product with photography enthusiasts.

Professionals, on the other hand, tend to turn more and more to hybrid models, which are more modern, less noisy and much more efficient.

“Market needs are rapidly shifting towards mirrorless cameras,” explains Fujio Mitarai, the group's CEO.

A substantive change

The disappearance of the professional SLR is probably only the first step before a complete transition to the mirrorless camera.

In the long term, the SLR range should completely disappear in favor of these cameras without mirrors and much more focused on connectivity and digital features than their cousins.

Canon is not the only one to embrace the hybrid.

Sony and Panasonic already only offer hybrid models to their customers.
