In the early 2000s, before the advent of smartphones as we know them today, the BlackBerry brand was particularly prestigious.
Unfortunately, the company has failed to adapt to the new market and has lost its aura over time.
January 4, 2022 marked in its own way a fateful day for the brand: the one when it will say goodbye to its personal operating system.
Before Android and iOS became hegemonic, manufacturers used to design their operating systems in-house.
This was notably the case of BlackBerry with BlackBerry OS.
Those days now seem to be over.
As of January 4, 2022, devices running BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry 7.1 OS or earlier versions will have the majority of their services disabled.
It will no longer be possible to make calls, send text messages or even make emergency calls.
Wi-Fi and cellular data will also no longer be available.
Native BlackBerry applications will not be spared.
A conclusion long announced
This situation was, however, long awaited by the last BlackBerry OS users, who in 2019 saw the services of BlackBerry Messenger and the Black Berry AppStore be closed. The company had also already announced in 2016 that it intended to stop manufacturing phones to focus on business and government services activities. “Today, BlackBerry is focused on delivering smart security software and services to businesses and governments around the world,” the brand announces.
Obviously, this news only concerns BlackBerry phones running on the proprietary OS.
BlackBerry phones running Android will continue to operate.
The company also encourages users affected by this shutdown of services to turn to one of the new BlackBerry smartphones.
