• In 2021, because of the coronavirus, the CES in Las Vegas had been only virtual.

This Wednesday, it opens face-to-face and among the start-ups present, we find Sodium Cycles.

  • This company from Anglet (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) will present its small electric motorcycle with a vintage look, Xubaka.

  • This 50 cc model can drive at a speed of 50 km / h with around fifty kilometers of autonomy.

We knew about electric bicycles, electric scooters. A little less electric motorcycles. Yet it is on this model that Benoît Marty bet, a former engineer passionate about old motorcycles and keen on ecology. Based in Anglet (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), with a partner, he created the start-up Sodium Cycles and launched at the beginning of 2018 a first 50 cc equivalent model, Xubaka. Three years later, he will be at CES in Las Vegas this year to speed up the marketing of his devastating-looking bike, which started in April 2021.

"We have launched the production of a first series of 100 vehicles, and we have already sold about twenty, directly to individuals or communities such as the city of Biarritz, as well as to rental companies" explains Benoît Marty. “We are mainly targeting the urban CSP + market, aged between 30 and 55, for home-work or home-leisure trips. The first users tell us that it has become a real alternative to the car, on short journeys. It is a different use of the electric bicycle. "

Small electric motorcycle with around fifty kilometers of autonomy, Xubaka drives at 50 km / h, and weighs a little over 50 kg.

It is marketed at a base price of 5.590 euros including tax.

“The electric motorcycle market in France today represents 20,000 vehicles, but it is a rapidly growing market, between 50 and 70% per year.

We hope to approach one million euros in turnover in 2022 ”, ambitions the founder of Sodium Cycles.

The inspiration for the chassis comes from a big-wheeled BMX

On the look side, Xubaka does not leave you indifferent with its vintage appearance. “I love vintage motorcycles, I've been restoring them since I was 13,” says Benoît Marty. There is clearly an aesthetic that is similar to motorcycles between the 1940s and 1970s, with the big round headlight in front, and at the same time we wanted something very refined, with as little material as possible. The inspiration for the chassis comes from a BMX with big wheels. "

Equipped with a tubular frame, the machine is made almost entirely in France.

“We only have two components that come from Asia, insists Benoît Marty, the rest are European or French, and even regional with 80% of the parts coming from the great South-West: the saddles are made in Vendée, the chassis is welded and painted in the Hautes-Pyrénées, the electronic card is made in the Basque Country, the wiring harness in Puy-en-Velay… ”

Energy recovery

The lithium-ion battery can be recharged either directly on the motorcycle or at home since the machine is equipped with a battery tray with a lockable cover, which allows it to be removed and recharged on 220 V. “The battery recharges to 80% in one hour, and to 100% in three or four hours.

»A hub motor installed on the rear wheel makes it possible to perform regeneration, ie to recover around 15% of energy when braking and decelerating.

And the machine is obviously completely silent.

Our dossier on CES in Las Vegas 2022

“We are now working on an equivalent in 125 cc, announces Benoît Marty, who will keep this tubular chassis.

It will go at a speed between 100 and 130 km / h, for a range between 100 km and 200 km.

The machine is expected for the beginning of the year 2023.
