A report on piracy in Europe between January 2017 and December 2020 has just been published by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

This indicates that the frequency of consumption of pirated content fell sharply between the start and the end of the survey.

The study looked at the consumption habits of films, music and television programs obtained illegally and which infringe the copyrights of their creators.

It relies on access data to websites providing pirated content in all Member States of the European Union and in the United Kingdom.

The methods of accessing pirated content included various methods like streaming, downloading, torrents, and ripping software.

The analysis is based on a dataset comprising more than 133 billion hits.

A constant decrease

According to the data collected, Internet users downloaded pirated content in the European Union on average 11.7 times per month.

This amount was only 5.9 times a month in 2020.

There was therefore a 50.4% decrease in piracy between January 2017 and December 2020. The recorded decrease was continuous with a decrease of 20% in 2018, 6% in 2019 and 34% in 2020. Among these 5, 9 times a month, 4.1 are spent on pirated television programs, 1.2 times for films and finally 0.6 times for music.

The coronavirus had a slight impact on film piracy during the spring of 2020, but it quickly subsided and the decline continued during the pandemic.

One of the reasons that may explain the decrease in pirating habits is the explosion of legal streaming services like Netflix, Disney + or Spotify, which have made it much easier to access video or audio content.

“Our report on digital piracy shows that while much remains to be done to address piracy and copyright issues, especially in a world where the digital market is growing, we seem to be on the right track. », Concludes Christian Archambeau, Executive Director of EUIPO.
