A husband who was caring for his wife with dementia has been sentenced to prison for killing his wife, saying that he cannot be a burden to his children.

According to the legal community today (21st), the 1st Criminal Division of the Western Branch of the Busan District Court (Judge Lee Jin-hyuk) sentenced a 78-year-old man charged with murder to 4 years in prison.

A was handed over to trial on the 30th of August for the murder of his 70-year-old wife suffering from dementia at his home in Buk-gu, Busan.

Mr. A and his wife have had one child and have been married for 40 years.

My wife was diagnosed with dementia in April after fighting for a long time with arthritis and diabetes, and since August, the symptoms of dementia have worsened and she has reached a situation where she cannot even pass urine.

After his wife showed symptoms of dementia, A also suffered from depressive disorders, cerebral infarction, and dementia.

Mr. A and his wife decided to make an extreme choice, thinking that they could no longer burden their children.

He then strangled and killed his wife, who was lying in his room, but he did not take his own life.

The court said, "Murder violates the precious value of human life and cannot be justified for any reason."

“However, Mr. A has been taking care of his wife alone without a caregiver. Mr. A himself is a grade 5 physical disability and has various diseases. It seems that he committed the crime accidentally, thinking that he would die together when his wife’s health deteriorated.” I explained why.
