Ministry of Justice's amnesty review committee, which selects the presidential amnesty targets, started with a two-day schedule. It is expected that Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, two former presidents, will be excluded from this amnesty, the fifth amnesty under the Moon Jae-in administration.

Correspondent Kim Kwan-jin reported.

Prior to the amnesty review committee to determine the target for a special pardon and lottery, the Minister of Justice unusually mentioned the expected size.

[Park Beom-gye / Minister of Justice: The principles and standards of amnesty are set. I think it will be quite large.]

Last month, the Ministry of Justice sent an official letter to front-line prosecutors and correctional institutions to report the list of offenders, model prisoners, and assembly and demonstration offenders, so it is likely that these will be the targets for amnesty.

As for the offenders of the Gypsy Act, the Hanjin Heavy Industries Hope Bus protest, the protest against the deployment of THAAD, and the protesters against the construction of the Jeju naval base are mentioned.

The two former presidents, Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye, both had their sentences confirmed by the Supreme Court and met the legal conditions for an amnesty, but the prevailing view is that the possibility is small.

President Moon Jae-in has raised public consensus on the condition of pardons for the two former presidents several times, including at a New Year's press conference earlier this year, and until recently, the Blue House drew a line saying that the two former presidents were "not discussed".

Former President Park recently complained of worsening health and was in the hospital for nearly a month at Samsung Seoul Hospital, but according to the opinion of the medical staff, he decided to receive treatment for another six weeks, the Ministry of Justice said.

In addition to the orthopedic surgery and dentistry that have been treated, it is noteworthy that the department of psychiatry has been added.

If the amnesty review committee of the Ministry of Justice decides on the target of amnesty tomorrow (21st), it will be announced around next week after President Moon's approval and a resolution by the State Council.
