It is a costly mistake.

In 2013, James Howells, a computer engineer, accidentally threw one of his hard drives into a landfill in Wales.

Problem: it contained 7,500 bitcoins.

If at that time, the price of this cryptocurrency was not yet very high, today the content of this hard drive is estimated at 454 million dollars.

After trying to get his hands on this object by various means, James Howells has now decided to call on NASA to help him recover his data, reports

In his quest for the precious hard drive, the computer engineer therefore chose to surround himself with engineers from the American space agency.

"They were able to retrieve data from an exploded shuttle and they don't seem to think that looking in a landfill will be a problem," he said.

With this prestigious reinforcement, James Howells finally hopes to convince the municipality of Newport, in Wales.

So far, this commune has refused to give in to his demands, despite the fact that he has promised to bequeath a quarter of the booty.

An area of 200 square meters and 15 meters deep

"I'm asking them for a three-month feasibility study so that we can sit down and outline our plans, so they can voice their concerns and we can address them, but they don't want to give me that," he said. argued the engineer who ensures that he will bear all the costs necessary for the operation.

According to his early studies, the hard drive could be located in an area of 200 square meters 15 meters deep.

The research that would be carried out using artificial intelligence technology specially developed for this mission is expected to last in nine and twelve months.

It remains to be seen whether the municipality will give its consent ...
