The device is equipped with a High Resolution Epithermal Neutron Detector (FREND), which allows detecting the presence of hydrogen in the upper layer of the Martian soil.

Study leader Igor Mitrofanov stated that "FREND has discovered an area with unusually large amounts of hydrogen in the colossal system of the Mariner Valley canyon."

It is noted that the estimated water-rich area is comparable in size to the Netherlands.

Scientists speculate that it most likely exists in the form of ice.
