The social network TikTok has long remained a mystery and its opacity has been criticized many times.

The functioning of its algorithm has always been carefully guarded, thus avoiding explaining how the news feed "For you" was transformed after viewing such and such content.

But the mystery is now raised, according to

Le Figaro,

 which reports information from the

New York Times

.

The American newspaper obtained a document entitled "TikTok Algo 101", written by the team of development of the application in Beijing.

The report was reportedly leaked to the press thanks to an anonymous person.

It reveals the mathematical operation of the application but also its ability to analyze users from the videos viewed.

Personality, envy, speed of boredom… Everything is combed through.

Towards an emphasis on “sad” content?

TikTok would analyze two elements in particular: retention, or its ability to make you return to the application, and the time spent on it.

“The system tries to make people dependent rather than giving them what they really want.

In a few hours, the algorithm can detect musical tastes, physical preferences, know if you are depressed or if you are on drugs.

",

explains Guillaume Chaslot, the founder of Algo Transparency.

The information collected would be used to encourage users to stay on the platform as long as possible.

Each video viewed receives a score from the algorithm.

It is calculated from its number of views, likes, comments and the time spent on each content.

"The algorithm returns the videos with the highest ratings to users," the document said.

The latter also notes that "the monetization of creators" is one of TikTok's goals.

The application could choose to promote certain videos that generate donations of money from users but also to highlight “sad” content.

TikTok ensures for its part to work on the removal of all videos that do not respect the conditions of use.
