Tencent must now ask Chinese regulators for permission if it wants to release new apps or update existing apps.

The responsible ministry in the country says it took this measure after some of the tech giant's apps "violated the rights and interests of users".

It was not disclosed which apps were involved and why they did not meet the requirements.

Tencent said in a response it regularly works with government agencies to "ensure regulatory compliance".

"Our apps remain functional and available for download," the company said.

The Chinese authorities have been tightening the supervision of tech companies such as Tencent for some time.

The government has decided to take tougher action against large concerns that hold a lot of power and were until recently bound by few rules.
