As the group BTS won the Artist of the Year award, which is the first Asian singer to be awarded at the three major American Music Awards in the United States, attention is also being paid to whether they will benefit from military service.

The National Assembly Defense Committee Bills Subcommittee is scheduled to discuss the 'Amendment to the Military Service Act' tomorrow (25th).

The amendment to the Military Service Act contains content that allows pop culture artists with a high contribution to the national interest to perform alternative military service as art and sports agents. Only those who have been recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism are eligible for exemption from military service.

However, as Korean pop culture, including K-pop, is gaining worldwide popularity, arguments have been steadily raised that pop culture artists should also be included in the military service exception. There is growing public opinion that it should be applied.

However, some opposing opinions such as 'the preference standard is ambiguous' and 'there should not be too much injustice as much as the military issue' is not formidable.
