The exhibition scene in Madrid is on fire.

With a multitude of openings every week, the options multiply and the choice becomes increasingly difficult.

We move a bit away from the great museums and galleries and look at other spaces with original, fun, different proposals ... Here are 15 to take into account in these weeks.

1. WORLD PRESS PHOTO 2021

The most important exhibition of photojournalism in the world returns to the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM) with the winning snapshots of the prestigious contest.

In this edition, the pandemic has been very present among the winners, such as the winner of the Photo of the Year,

The first hug

, made by the Danish photographer Mads Nissen, of the AP agency.

The exhibition presents more than 150 snapshots of 48 photographers from 28 countries, which reflect the most important events that occurred in 2020. Among the winners are also four Spaniards.

2. Clifford.

Views of Isabel II's Madrid

Dedicated to the work of Charles Clifford, a Welsh photographer who lived in Madrid between 1850 and 1863, the exhibition brings together a hundred of his snapshots

of Madrid in the mid-nineteenth century and its modernization process

through the great civil works of the time .

The exhibition, with images borrowed from prestigious institutions, allows us to know the ambitious work of engineering that transformed a Madrid very different from the current one.

3. Alfonso.

Beware of memory

This tribute to the family saga of the Alphonsus, precursors of modern photography and promoters of the graphic press genre, reviews some of

the main episodes in the history of Spain throughout the troubled 20th century

.

More than 150 images (39 originals in the display cabinets and 147 copies made from the negatives of the Alfonso Archive) make up this anthological journey through different times, places, landscapes and key moments in the country's past.

4. Transmissions

To commemorate the 11th anniversary of flamenco as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the SGAE hosts this exhibition with 25 photographs of artists, creators and singer-songwriters from different generations, including La Niña de los Peines, Carmen Amaya, Carmen Linares,

Camarón de la Isla, Paco de Lucía, Estrella Morente

or Rosalía.

The exhibition includes a projection of images, accompanied by the sound of a flamenco cajon, on the facade of the Longoria Palace.

5.Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience

Immersive experience that delves into the life and work of the famous Dutch painter.

The exhibition features activities that allow visitors to use a microscope to learn more about Vincent's materials, techniques, and tools;

investigate the layers of your paintings;

learn to use perspective as the artist did with a drawing frame;

or explore your room thanks to the life-size recreation of your bedroom.

6. Steve McCurry.

ICONS

The American photojournalist, author of the

famous portrait of the Afghan girl Sharbat Gula

, on the cover of

National Geographic

magazine

in 1985, presents a retrospective with the most iconic images of his career.

More than 100 large format snapshots, where the human element is always the protagonist, are part of this journey through McCurry's photographic universe, with people of different ages, cultures and ethnicities.

7. Madrid Metal.

An illustrated history of the 80s

A series of works by 16 current authors who have known how to illustrate, based on files and references, what it was to be heavy, make up this tribute to Madrid in the 80s around this musical style.

None of the artists knew the movement first-hand, but, through memories of its protagonists, the young people of that time have managed to capture the metal scene of that time.

8. HAVE A LOT OF FRUIT

This is the title of the new exhibition by Alfredo Alcain (Madrid in 1936), 2003 National Prize for Plastic Arts, which includes more than 40 works selected from 1958 to 2021 that reflect the

painter's passion for fruit.

The pieces are made in different techniques: oil paintings, engravings, collages, watercolors ... and there are from figurative or abstract still lifes to relief works or sculptures full of color and contrasts.

9. Xacobeo.

The footprints of the Camino.

On the occasion of the Compostela holy year of 2021 (which extends to 2022), this exhibition is presented that shows the manuscript, bibliographic, audiovisual, cartographic and literary collections of the National Library of Spain related to the Camino de Santiago.

In it you will be able to see

the multiple manifestations that the pilgrimage route

has produced for more than nine centuries to highlight its historical, cultural, patrimonial, natural and human wealth.

10. More Inside

Conceptual exhibition in which Luis Parejo, illustrator for El Mundo, collects collages, real photos, illustrations and photomontages

inspired by the person and character of Fernando Porres

.

It is a tribute to this icon of Madrid nightlife and pop culture that includes some 30 works in which Porres blends in with his surroundings, as if he had the gift of ubiquity that is multiplying.

In each of the pieces, the author plays with identity, confusing reality with fiction and even character with person.

11. The great imagination.

Stories from the future

How the future was thought in the past is the reflection that this exhibition proposes, a journey through images and fictions from different times that were born to venture what could exist in a different time.

The works reflect from the seventeenth century to 2050, when some of its creators set a future time.

14. Tintinóphilic glances

Lovers of the intrepid reporter have a date with this tribute to

The Adventures of Tintin

through the eyes of prominent tintinóphiles.

In it you can see first editions, meet with the comic historian Enric Melego curiosities of the world of Tintin or discover some of the longest journeys made by the reporter through the interactive world map with texts by Eduardo Martínez de Pisón.

15. Mexicans

The international exhibition of urban art inspired by the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead lands in Parla with 19 monumental and colorful skulls made of fiberglass on mold and developed under various techniques.

It is an

updated version of the pre

Hispanic rituals

of adorning the skulls in the funeral rites to display them in the ceremonies, making the skulls a spiritual symbol.
