Instagram wants to ensure that new registrants on its platform are indeed humans.

This is why the application has implemented a video authentication system.

New registrants will have to record a selfie video of themselves to verify their identities, reports

“We need a short video of you turning your head in different directions.

This helps us to confirm that you are a real person and to confirm your identity, ”a screenshot of the tool reads.

The video is sent to the infrastructure of Meta, the parent company, and thanks to artificial intelligence, it will be possible to verify that the account is held by a real person and not created by a robot.

Videos deleted after 30 days

With this measure, Instagram wants to hunt fake accounts and profiles that are the source of spam.

A phenomenon more and more present for months.

But it could also intimidate newcomers to the platform.

Meta would like to reassure them: the videos collected will not be visible on Instagram and will remain recorded for thirty days.

They will then be deleted.

Biometric data is not collected.

This video verification was deployed last August but Instagram had encountered technical problems.

These therefore seem to have been resolved.

While for now, the tool is only for newcomers to the platform, Instagram could also use it to check for suspicious accounts when unwanted activity is detected.
