The airbag in a car is such a matter of course that it is hardly talked about anymore.

It is hardly discussed in the two-wheeled industry either, but for a different reason: it doesn't exist there.

With one exception.

Honda has been equipping its luxury touring motorcycle Gold Wing with safety-enhancing bag technology, and has been doing so since 2007. The introduction of the system back then was a sensation and aroused the expectation that the Japanese would use the technology that can provide protection in certain impact accidents could customize other models.

But to this day, the Gold Wing is the only motorcycle in the world available with an airbag, and no other manufacturer followed suit.

There are several reasons for this: costs, weight and a lack of space on board, which is not known from a housing on four wheels.

This week, the Italian Piaggio Group (Vespa, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi) surprised everyone with the announcement of a partnership with the automotive supplier group Autoliv to develop an airbag for scooters and motorcycles.

It will be interesting to see if something will come of it.

And when.

Honda had invested more than ten years and large sums of money until the airbag was ready for series production.
