If there is something at the tourist and landscape level that competes in the Jerte Valley with the impressive, but ephemeral, spectacle of the flowering of the cherry trees that occurs in this place with the arrival of spring, for just three weeks, it is

the picture of those same trees with the arrival of autumn

.

The region to the north of Extremadura, in the western foothills of the Sierra de Gredos, is stained with reddish, ocher and brown tones as a result of the color change in the leaves of more than half a million of these specimens.

Hand in hand with this marvelous landscape, the 11 municipalities that dot the valley, grouped in the Association of Municipalities of Valle del Jerte, take the opportunity to publicize their culture, environment and traditions through a very unique festival:

the Fall of the Jerte Valley

, an initiative that, after last year's hiatus due to the pandemic, once again presents a wide program of leisure, cultural, sports, gastronomic and artistic activities.

Art exhibitions, competitions, fairs and conferences on local products, markets, theater festivals, etc.

they will be a part of the lives of the locals (and visitors) every weekend until mid-December (see program here).

We propose some of the most interesting.

La Toñá Piornalega (from November 12 to 14)

A rendezvous with folklore and tradition in

Piornal

, the highest town in Jerte with sober mountain architecture.

The main squares of the small town, called biornales, the Town Hall, the Church and the Palace, will be the scene of concerts, choirs and dances, as well as an artisan market with tastings of local products.

X Week of the Garganta de los Infierno Natural Reserve

From November 13 to 21, those interested will be able to participate in various proposals to enter, discover and learn about this spectacular corner of northern Extremadura, full of waterfalls and waterfalls, as well as the giant kettles of the area known as Los Pilones.

Among them, there are from

mycological days

, with later tasting of mushrooms at the Garganta los Infierno picnic area (price: 5 euros; information here),

to horse

riding by the Los Pilones riding school (free; registrations: 927 01 49 36) , workshops and talks or

caving

in the Reserve by the multi-adventure tourism company GECKO (registrations: 927 01 49 36).

Cabrero (November 18)

It is worth strolling through the narrow and labyrinthine streets of the village of Cabrero, of about 300 inhabitants, born at the end of the Middle Ages as a nucleus of shepherds.

On November 18, the tables of goatherds and cheese makers will be set up, with local artisan products.

VI Traditional Extremadura slaughter in Valdastillas

On November 27, the Plaza Mayor de Valdastillas, a small town in the foothills of the Sierra de Tormantos, in the heart of the Jerte Valley, will be the scene where the staging

of a traditional Extremadura slaughter

will take place

, with its subsequent tasting.

The day is completed with hiking plans in the beautiful surroundings, a market of cold meats and live music.

The 'Celtic Autumn' in Casas del Castañar (December 5 and 6)

During a weekend, the town of Casas del Castañar hosts a festival dedicated to the search for the Celtic roots of the Jerte Valley, with a series of activities, ranging from guided tours to Castro Celta, a Celtic market, with sale of wood, stone and metal crafts, to live music by Celtic groups, conferences, exhibitions ...

Gastronomy

Gastronomy has a primary space in the Otoñada.

Until December 12, the XV

Pastoril Gastronomic Days

are held

.

Several restaurants in the Valley, among which are Garza Real (Valdastillas), La Flor de Cerezo (Jerte), La Tenería (Jerte) or Candilejas (Jerte), participate every weekend with their tasting menus, inspired by the cuisine traditional pastoral and with typical autumn products, at a fixed price (from 25 euros).

The menus and restaurants participating in the conference, here.

Trekking

The beautiful natural environment of the Jerte is full of trails to travel and let yourself be carried away by the spectacular landscapes.

The La Otoñada festival also includes

guided tours with experts

through some of the most beautiful and interesting places (some free).

Among them, in addition to the one mentioned by the Garganta de los Infierno (November 20), there are others such as the

Roble Prado Sancho

(on Saturday, November 13, from 10 a.m.), which leads to this Singular Tree of Extremadura, located in Cabezuela del Valle, which stands out for its 22 meters high and five meters perimeter (inscriptions here), or the

Route to the Salmonidae Breeding Center

(December 5), about 5 km long, easy to do with children, which runs between forests and cherry tree farms.
