"On Earth at about 01:00 Moscow time, one of the largest magnetic storms of recent years began unexpectedly," the FIAN RIA Novosti report quotes.

It is noted that the index of geomagnetic activity after midnight jumped to seven with a maximum value of nine.

Scientists predict that this state of the planet's magnetic field will persist for two to three days.

The researchers explain that the magnetic storm was caused by a solar flare of the M1.7 level, which occurred two days ago.

The RAS has previously assessed the danger of a magnetic storm approaching Russia.
