A 30-year-old adoptive parent who killed a 3-year-old adopted child who showed signs of brain hemorrhage after taking him on a family trip by giving him sleeping pills has been sentenced to prison.

Yesterday (3rd), the 11th Criminal Settlement Section of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Ji-seon Jung) sentenced 34-year-old A and 38-year-old B, who were charged with child abuse and murder, to 3 and 5 years in prison, respectively. They were also ordered to complete 40-80 hours of a child abuse treatment program and to be restricted from employment at child-related institutions for 3-5 years.

A couple was sent to trial on charges of causing the death of a 3-year-old adopted child, C, who showed signs of cerebral hemorrhage without taking him to the hospital. They had two children, but adopted two children in 2015, including group C with developmental disabilities.

Group C showed symptoms of cerebral hemorrhage such as a high fever of 39-40 degrees and seizures on April 13, 2019. However, it was investigated that the couple A took a family trip from their house in Haenam, Jeollanam-do to Jinju, Gyeongnam, after giving zolpidem, a sleep inducing drug, to group C, who could not even eat well the next day.

They left Kun C in a hotel room without taking him to the hospital, and they called 911 only after discovering that the child was apnea that night.

Group C, who was taken to the hospital, died within 2 hours of head injuries such as subdural hemorrhage, brain bruises and brain edema.

Couple A said, "There was no fact that he was given zolpidem, and (the deceased adopted child) was able to eat food when he went on a family trip. He was conscious even when he arrived at the hotel." I didn't realize the point."

However, the court said, "Considering that no traces of spitting out while taking zolpidem were found at home, and the high concentration of zolpidem was not detected in the blood, it is believed that the adopted child received the medication rather than taking it on his own. judge,” he explained.

He continued, "If you look at the contents of the Internet searches of the defendants, they knew that it was a cerebral hemorrhage and were already aware that emergency treatment was needed." They gave him food and neglected him,” he said, explaining the reason for his sentencing.
