Language app Duolingo says that due to the popularity of the South Korean Netflix series

Squid Game,

considerably more users want to learn Korean.

Worldwide there are now almost 8 million interested people, while a total of 77 million people already speak the language.

Duolingo reports that in some countries, such as the United Kingdom, the number of interested parties has increased by at least 76 percent.

In the United States, it was an increase of at least 40 percent.

There are no specific figures for the Netherlands.

According to Duolingo, Korean is the fastest growing language of the platform.

A spokesperson told

Het Laatste Nieuws

that the group had already grown due to the popularity of K-pop and the South Korean film

Parasite

, the first non-English language film to win an Oscar.

Currently, however, there would be an "unprecedented peak".

Squid Game

is about a mysterious organization that recruits people in debt into a series of seemingly childish games for a chance to win $38 million.

The series was watched by a record 142 million people via Netflix in the first four weeks after its premiere.

The streaming service gained significantly more new subscribers than expected in the third quarter, partly thanks to the success of the series.
