Scam Beware of postal notices: they warn of a dangerous mass fraud campaign
Sim Swapping The dangerous fashion scam: Doubling your mobile number to empty your bank account
The National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) has warned through its Internet User Security Office of a new massive fraud campaign launched in our country that takes advantage of the widespread habit of Spaniards to
buy online
.
According to the public body, several SMS campaigns have been identified supplanting parcel services.
These messages state that a package has been found for the recipient and that it
is supposedly pending delivery
to the user since August.
However, such a package does not exist.
The goal is to trick users into clicking on the link that accompanies the message.
After
clicking
, they are redirected to a
malicious page
from which they are prompted to download a rogue application.
The threat, classified as of medium importance by the body, nevertheless has some elements that invite the user to distrust.
For example, the different forms of the
fraudulent message
alternate words written in uppercase with others in lowercase and with misspellings.
A campaign that, according to Incibe warn, can be "
extended through other means
, such as emails or instant messaging."
What to do if you have received one of these SMS?
Those who have been victims of this scam (that you have received
an SMS of these characteristics
and you have downloaded the malicious application) quite possibly have their mobile phones infected with
Malware
.
In these cases, INCIBE recommends removing the application and scanning it with an updated antivirus.
Likewise, they also explain that
you must "inform your contacts about this attack
, since the
malware will
use the contacts in your phonebook to send fraudulent SMS and be able to capture more victims."
If you have installed the malicious application file (with .apk extension), you may not be able to
uninstall the application
or delete the downloaded .apk file.
In that case, it is recommended that users restore their mobile phone to factory settings for greater security.
On the contrary, those who have received the SMS but have not downloaded the malicious application, simply must
delete the message from their inbox
so as not to install it by mistake.
